Nitrous Oxide gravest danger to Earth's ozone layer
by Stevie Smith - Aug 28 2009, 15:45
Nitrous oxide only making this hole bigger.

The continuing environmental onslaught of manmade gasses has this week seen scientists singling out nitrous oxide (a.k.a. laughing gas) as a particularly guilty source of destruction against our planet’s increasingly delicate atmosphere.

According to a report issued by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), nitrous oxide has become the most damaging manmade substance presently wreaking havoc with the protective ozone layer – and is expected to be the leading threat for at least the next 90 years.

“Nitrous oxide emission currently is the single most important ozone-depleting substance emission and is expected to remain the largest throughout the 21st century,” the report outlined in this week’s edition of the journal Science.

The report, which sees nitrous oxide progress beyond CFCs as the main threat to the ever-thinning ozone layer, further revealed that around 10 million tonnes of the gas is produced every year from the production and usage of livestock waste, fertilisers, fossil fuels and the substance’s applications as a medical anaesthetic.

Around 20 million tonnes of nitrous oxide is produced naturally upon the planet every year through such things as soil bacteria, but scientists now believe Mankind’s additional contribution poses a serious threat to an already damaged atmosphere and environment.

Rather than being a rising threat, the NOAA report posits that substantial CFC reduction, as a result of regulation provided by the U.N.’s 1987 Montreal Protocol, has now elevated threat levels associated with nitrous oxide.

Presently the Montreal Protocol does not cover the regulation of manmade nitrous oxide.
